Kentucky colonel is an honorary title bestowed upon individuals by approval of the governor of Kentucky. The award is presented to those who make exceptional efforts to enrich the lives of Kentuckians and the world at large.

While our esteemed Col's here did receive theirs for good works (as do most non Kentuckians), all it takes is another Col to nominate you and your "commission" is almost automatic. A friend of my wife's got her husband nominated and his commission for his birthday two years ago.
