Jim, The workmanship is very good, but like others have pointed out, the raw edge makes it look ragged.
Tandy Leather has a took called a edge slicker I think. It is nylon with grooves on a half circle on one end. Not too expensive. Put a little water on the edge, just damp, and rub the slicker over it a few times. You can also order something called Gum Tragacanth from Tandy. Rub a bit of this on the edge and then the slicker. It makes a really nice smooth edge. I learned this from cavscout and am just passing it along.
Tandy also has the dyes and antique stains in water base that can be mailed.
