So now the Jonesing begins again. Can anyone on board guess when an order placed today is likely to be delivered?

REMEMBER this stuff is damaged! Yes, you can probably make a kilt out of it, a number of people on the board have done so, but you may have to piece some bits together, cleverly under the pleat folds and so on. I'd buy a little bit extra. It might be oil-stained/spotted, when you get it, Moosedogs batch was...mine wasn't. Just BE AWARE that this is "damaged goods" and don't go blue in the face if you have to do a fair bit of extra work to make it into a nice kilt.

AND....as Riverkilt says, kilts aren't the ONLY thing you can make out of this stuff.

Mine turned around in about a week, but I think Tartan Hiker ordered a day or two before I did. Maybe he'll get his, today.

Fullers Earth will work on a new and still fresh stain. It will not work on set in grease.

DO NOT put todays unleaded gasoline on Wool. There are additives to break down the surface tension and make the gas vaporize faster and these will leave a permanant smell of gas on the fabric. It is also more harsh at removing that Lanolin than dry cleaning fluid.

For a really set in stain, in something other than a kilt, you can use lighter fluid and fullers earth but you must still replace the lanolin. You put a layer of Fullers earth on a towel. About a 1/4" thick. Laying the fabric on top and running lighter fluid thru the fabric.
It works by floating the lanolin out of the Wool and taking the oil or grease with it. The Fullers Earth then absorbs both.

    Thanks, Steve, for the info.

I was really just being facetious about the use of gasoline...as I said, that would be something that my dad or his family would have done and they always had some cocamamie old-wives-tale way of doing things...it amazes me that any of us have survived since this attitude extended to medical care as well as fabric maintenance.

Wow, not to rub it in or anything, but I got two meters (for a 4 yard box pleated kilt) about a month ago. I can't find a thing wrong with the selvedge on either side. It's sounding like I got the last "kiltable" piece. lucky me.

    FYI

I just tried to buy some more so I could piece together a kilt but Gordon says they are now down to 2 meters. Also the discolorations on mine do not look like oil--they appear more like bleached spots, almost as if an attempt was made to remove stains.

I am still not complaining, I know I got a great deal. Blind hem attachment, here I come!

Whoah! Glad I didn't wait any longer.

Hey, we bought up all of that run, then.... that's great. Gordon still got killed on the price, but at least it didn't sit there on the slhelves for ten years collecting dust and annoying everybody. He got SOME of his investment back, anyway.

    AND

.....sounds like a mess of us are going to be making 4-yard box pleat kilts.

My 2 meters was awaiting me when I got home from work today. Yipee!

Imagine my surprise when I opened the parcel to find 2.5 meters! The selvedge is as chewed up as any I've seen pictured here, but I cannot find any stains whatsoever, so that's just fine.

Now the problem. With that extra length (Thanks Gordon!) I could make a 5-yard knife pleat instead of a 4-yard box-pleat. Oh the anguish of yet another decision! What to do? What to do?

Yah, I got a bit more than 2 metres as well. It comes out to exactly 2.25 yards. 81 inches...so if I don't waste an inch, and if I combine the two halves I can make a 4.5 yard knife pleat kilt.

six inch sett....uh...that makes 27 setts. I wind up with 15 setts to divide up into pleats, meaning 15 pleats. Nope, that's not really enough. Now, if I'd gotten 2.5 yards, so 5 yards when the halves were put together, then that'd be 30 setts and 18, maybe 19 pleats and then we'd be starting to talk, here.

    But no....so a box-pleat it is.
