Maybe it has been mentioned in another thread, but since I posted this this morning, I've been wondering how the length of the kilt got set at "Knee length. More than an inch either way and it isn't a kilt." Hopefully Matt Newsome, Todd, or someone who knows a lot more about the the history of the garment can shed some light on why there is such a tight constraint on the length of the garment. I mean, as McGurk mentioned, a belted plaid could have (whether it was done historically or not) been worn at almost any length. So why precisely knee length? Why not ankle length? Why not mid-calf? (I can answer why not mid-thigh myself!)

I have to agree on that one.

Indeed. If I were into the London, New York or Paris club scene I'd wear it but I'm not so..... I can, however, see Prince Harry in it.

Probably from the Victorians. They had rules for everything.

The belted plaid was worn above the knee and the top part of it could droped off the shoulders and worn like a long skirt on a cold day and then pulled up over the shoulder as the day warmed up.
