Tartan Identification
Hello, I'm extremely new to this community (about ten minutes..?) and I have what at least seems to be a relatively common question.
I recently acquired a kilt woven by Moffet Weavers of Scotland and I'm really interested to find out if this tartan belongs to any particular clan or if it's just a commercial pattern. I've tried searching for the answer myself and it seems the only way I'll ever be able to find it on my own is to scroll through about 4,000+ clans and hope I recognize the color scheme. Is there anyone out there who might know the answer? I would appreciate any help so very much!
Here is a scan of a section (pardon the garish white corner)..

First off from Sunny Southern California!
We have several very knowledgable members of this forum, and hopefully one of them will recognize this tartan. I too have had problems in the past trying to figure out what a particular tartan is. There is really no way that I know of to identify a tartan, except to look at others.
If you knew the exact thread count, and the mill that were the original weavers, then maybe you could correspond with them.
But if you only have an unknown kilt or a few yards of a tartan, I don't know what you do.
Good luck!

you could try asking Moffat Weavers themselves if they can identify it. http://www.foreverscotland.com/mini_...ll/contact.htm
if they don't wanna go through all that effort, perhaps you could get a list of the tartans they weave; their site says they have 500 which is big but a lot better than 4,000 plus. And once you crossed out common tartans that you know it isn't (Black Watch, Gordon, McLeod, etc) I bet it wouldn't be that bad. Unless of course it was a one off weaving for some special family/group.

I'd say to try asking Moffat Weavers first. If that doesn't work, try asking Matt Newsome as this one escapes me.
If HE doesn't know, try emailing the Scottish Tartans Authority and asking them.
