    Great story.

When I'm asked whether I play the pipes, I usually reply in deadpan, "No, I only play the radio." This tends to short-circuit things enough for me to move on pretty quickly. By your account, though, that may not have worked in this particular bonbonerie.

    Regards,
    Rex.

So, one day recently I was wearing my kilt in Colonial Williamsburg. I grabbed a nice yellow collared shirt and had kilt hose and whatnot on. In any case, for those who don't know Colonial Williamsburg is a mile by mile and a half (?) or so reconstruction of what Virginia's Colonial Capitol looked like in the 18th century. Forget the fact that I was wearing a modern kilt, a rather modern shirt, and modern looking shoes: clearly I looked like one of the tri-cornered hat and red-coated looking interpreters! So a woman asked me for directions to the pottery area. I said "is there one? The College's is down that street..." "Well, you work here, you should know." she replied. I explained I didn't work there. "Well" she reasoned "you sure look like you should." "I don't need to play dress up to wear a kilt!"

The other odd happening--families literally next to me, discussing in loud voices kilts, how they look, and every other kilt they saw. That's not so odd, but a few times I dared to try and say hello...Oops. I guess people believe that kilts prevent the wearer from hearing thing around them?

You mean to tell me that every person who wears a kilt DOESN'T play the bagpipes!

I get this question all the time...ALL the time.

You know, I think I might go buy a used set of really cheap import pipes.....get 'em on Craigslist or something. I'll outfit them with a set of really godawful reeds and pull all the chanters willdy out of tune. And then when the next person asks, I'll pull this weapon out and say."Why, yes, I DO play the bagpipes" and then proceed to destroy a reel in a bloody acoustic massacre that bears more resemblance to a V-8 with a thrown rod than anything vaguely associated with music.

    It never ends...

I often get the same question, as most of us kilt wearing sort do.

    "I LOVE kilts!"

    "Oh, thank you.."

    "Do you play the bagpipes."

"Yes, because I got tired of everyone asking me if I did."

    "...oh..."

Why is it that many people lose their manners and any hesitation to ask questions that they would never think of asking someone not in a kilt??

    Oh well.

My reply, of course, is "No, my son plays the pipes. I'm just the transportation." That stops 'em cold every time.

I've had the pipes question a few times and my stock answer has become "Why yes I do -- on CD!"
One has occasions when comments are unexpected as I did tonight. I had agreed to babysit for a bit f0or the neighbor whilst she and my wife went to a wine tasting when they returned another friend of my nieghbors' came in as I and my Bride were leaving. She looked at me and exclaimed "I like your kilt!" to which I replied "Thank-you I like wearing them." . It's true there are some who like them and there are some who "skirt "around them with some trepidation.

Back on topic to some kilt = performance or an occasion and will never it's just a wonderfully comfortable garment to wear.

Sounds like my situation...I never got to be the rock star that I always wanted to be, instead I'm my daughter's roadie.
