    Translating tartan correctly

I have a project that I need some help with so it is "correct".
I am making a quilted cotton project that will contain a tartan pattern in the piecing. I want to make the tartan pattern sized to reflect the actual weave threads. I need the help in getting the number of threads and their colors that make up the tartan. I'm specifically looking for Campbell Dress.

    Any suggestions?

You will need the thread count for that tartan, you might just do a search on the tartan name. Once you have the thread count and a picture of the tartan, you can use the numbers as perportional measurements. I'm having trouble explaining this, so you might read up on how tartan thread counts work. Good luck.

you may have trouble finding the thread count. I know the scottish tartans authority provides them to members, but I don't know of other reliable resources for thread counts. You might need to reverse-engineer it from a picture...

Yup, the thread count of the tartan. I will use a standard unit size per thread to create the pattern for piecing strips of fabric. I thought the Tartan Authority had them listed numerically but I haven't looked into joining.

Just fyi, in case you don't know, when you find the thread count, it will be one string of numbers. With a letter telling you the color and a number telling you the number of threads (proportionally). So that tells you the thread for one side, so what about the other? It'll be the same. Warp and weft are the same.

I think, for a small fee, Matt of the Scottish Tartans Museum can send you a printout and thread count for whatever version you go with. Might be nice to have the print as well as the count for the visual.

it's no bother, here you go, there are couple of variations of the Campbell dress tartan, if you care to post a picture of the particular tartan your interested in I will give you a thread count for it.

Name of Tartan: Ancient Campbell Dress

    Colour Sequence: WBWBWKGYGKBKBKBKGWGKWBWBWBWBWKGWGKBKBKBKGYGKWBWB
    Thread Count: WW8BL4WW32BL8WW6K16G16Y4G16K16BL16K4BL8K4BL16K16G1 6WW4G16K16WW6BL8WW32BL4WW8BL4WW32BL8WW6K16G16WW4G1 6K16BL16K4BL8K4BL16K16G16Y4G16K16WW6BL8WW32BL4

    Notes:

This dress version of the Campbell tartan first appeared in the Clans Originaux of 1880 - a tartan pattern book produced by a Parisian company called J. Claude Freres et Cie. The 12th Duke refused to accept this tartan as an official Campbell tartan. The present (13th) Duke has not passed an opinion as far as is known. The shade of blue shown here should not be regarded as standard.

Thank you so much Chris! I have traced my lineage to include Campbell and Livingstone. I need to decide which tartan to use.

Ok just let me know what one you are going to use, and a picture of it would help, and I can match it up and give you the thread count.

    Regards Chris
