New blade... ok not a sgian dubh, but it was going to start as one.

Last month I started a blade which I had originaly intended to create a sgian dubh with an integral bolster... Well as you can see, it didnt end up being a sgian dubh, but I thought that I'd share it anyways. This is the 5th knife that I've made now, and I'm hoping to get better and faster. You can sort of see from the forged shape how I intended to get a sgian dubh blade from it, but then I guess the metal just told me "I'm going to be a drop point hunter instead" and that's how it turned out.

It's a forged O1 integral hunter with a quilted sycamore handle.

Here are some in progress pictures.

I etch my name and logo myself as well.
Also here's a full side-on view of the knife

Now that this blade is done, I'm going to get to work for real on another sgian dubh =) I need to get a sgian done because someone I know has comissioned me to make them one, they dont wear a kilt (yet! i'm working on it) but they love the blade style of a sgian dubh.

I don't think I've ever seen a blade, quite like that. Really nice work.

How long is it? What is the wood? Sycamore you say? Looks to wide a grain?

    Anyway - nice knife.

Overall length is 8 inches, with a 3 inch blade. The wood is quilted sycamore. The pattern you see is actually perpendicular to the grain (the quilting) it's quite dense actually.

OK - That explains it. Yes, a little long for a sgian dubh.... although for a really big guy?

    Nice work.

I like it. It fits my requirements for a sgian dubh, sharp and functional. The handle shape would fit right into grasping fingers to pull it out. Never worked with sycamore before. Nice work.
