I'll second McMurdo on Velazquez. I have a copy of Las Meninas hanging in my office. I am fascinated by the layers in his paintings.

I would have to go with Leroy Neiman. Not only is his style very unique but he does have experinence painting kilties. Look in the forground.

I'm going to be Greedy & select three artists, Sargent, Raeburn, Lawrence,
but if I really had to pick one then I would plum for Sargent.
