We have also done baby kilts in the miniature Tartans such as the mini Black Watch from Marton Mills.

I'm sorry to say though that I don't think we can beat Sport Kilts prices. I may be wrong but I don't think your model on the right is going to fit into her kilt...

I wouldn't even bother with a kilt on a newborn. If you want the look, just wrap some tartan around them. There's no need to go through the trouble of an actual kilt.

I got a fantastic one from Pete at www.canadiancasualkilts.com
However since it is for a six month old, can I suggest that you have a look at tartantown here in BC. They sell a baby* and a youth kilt for around $20-$30. Here is the link http://www.tartantown.com/clothing.html I have seen these in the shop a few times and for the price and for a baby, they are great.

Remember that baby clothes are pretty generic and that it is always wise to go a size or to up. I would suggest the 12-24 month size

I think a "great kilt" for a baby is a pretty good idea... You could start with a yard or two of single-with cloth folded in half lengthwise, and as the child grows, you just pleat and fold it in whatever manner gets the job done, and when the kid is big enough, have it stitched up into a tailored kilt!

Get a onesie (One piece outfit that snaps at the bottom) from the baby section and go to the fabric store and get some cotton flannel and make a kilt and sew it right to the onesie. Have something like "the babes love me in my kilt" embroidered on the top and you have a kilt outfit for a 6 month old. I needs to be washable.

Well, I ordered the sport kilt (thanks for the suggestions, but with the free shipping [if you want anything from sportkilt, now's the time] they were the cheapest) and it arrived today. well, technically yesterday, but I haven't gone to sleep yet.
I would like to point out that the fedex guy decided to leave the box outside the apartment door. Not my door, or even the front door, but the side door. Last time I ordered from sk, they at least left it at my door, even though they didn't knock. If I order anything else from them, I'm going to have to remind them to ask for a signature, as I don't want to lose a kilt because they left a box wherever they felt like dropping it.

Now, back to the kilt. It's actually quite nice, and I'm happy with it. As I suspected the tiny little kilt doesn't have enough room for the tartan to repeat, so I'm glad I went with the us navy tartan, which looks like a rather small pattern. It's slightly darker than I expected, but looks good anyway. The only problem with the tartan is that the pattern is at a very slight angle. Barely noticeable really, but the bottom red stripe does go around to the back of the hem on the apron, while on the rest of the kilt both are visible. Most people wouldn't notice, particularly on a cute/adorable/mischievous/dirty/destructive/crying/active/typical baby, but it does bother me slightly, and makes me glad my sk is a solid color.

The material is soft, but feels quite sturdy. The velcro is quite tough and covers the full length of the apron (apparently babies have no need of the hidden pocket, as the only thing they need to store is a surprise in the diaper) and the elastic is surprisingly strong. Given the adjustability and elastic, I wouldn't be surprised if the kid outgrows the kilt vertically rather than horizontally.

Overall, I'm quite happy with it. Ultimately the real test will come when they actually put it on the kid, but until then, all I can say is it was worth it.

I also got myself one of the battle axe kilt pins to go with the swk thrifty I'm sure I'll get for christmas. It's fairly cool, even if he head is a little small compared to the handle. But it would hang weird otherwise, and I'm sure I'll be the only one to notice, so it's fine.

That's ok, she can jump in with the one on the left, seems to be a lot of space in that one ...

At the clan Christmas p[arty this past saturday one of the Clark girls had her 8 month old in a tartan kilt, likely from SK. If the general population can't tell a boy from a girl, well then the clothes won't make a difference either.
 He's a fine-lookin' little kiltie.
The Clark tartan is similar to the Clergy tartan, blue is a favorite color.
