will it work?
my wife and i moved to oklahoma a couple of months ago and are having tons of problems finding kilt wearers - or even scotsmen. we've decided that when the weather finally warms up again we'll put on our scottish attire (great kilt for me and arisaid for her) and go to a park in the middle of town. she'll be knitting or weaving on a portable loom and i'll be doing some leather work. some folks have told us we'd wind up on the front of the local paper, which might be a good thing for getting more interest - or it might be 'cause we've started a riot. what do y'all think? i'm kinda leaning to the idea that there are enough scottish roots in the south that we will draw a lot of interest.

that's true, BUT i'm not near okc... i'm in tahlequah. scottish games and festivals don't occur often even in the tulsa area. i'm trying to scrounge up local interest. i *like* wearing my kilt and would like to have something local to participate in. i mentioned it today to some folks. the men said absolutely nothing, just looked at me like i was an alien. then women made skirt comments. if i just dive into it i will be forced to teach impromptu martial arts classes. i'd rather do it peaceful like. this is redneck country, but that doesn't make them unteachable so long as i give them a bit of time to acclimate.

What I did in my little town is go through the phone book white pages looking for Scottish names.

it may come to that. we're thinking the sitting in the park working will draw interest in a kinder, gentler way than just walking down the street in a kilt. i'll probably run an ad in the paper too.

Oklahoma is not the south. It is the midwest, cowboys, indians, and kilted scots!

yeah. I was gonna say, I'm in the South and not even the Deep South at that. I say that setting up in the middle of town will definitely let people know you're around. Some people might think you're crazy, but did you really want ot be friends with them anyway?
That said, the best way to bring people together is to have free food. It doesn't even have to be good food. But if you cook it, they will come.

Man it's been a long time since I've even thought of Tahlequah! I used to live in Tulsa. Okies are cool. I think you might be better off than you think. I like your plan. Get some pics and let us know how it goes.

i like the food idea. we've got several months to get our ducks in a row, so i bet we have it down pat by then! we're in the seat of the cherokee nation and most cherokee's have a bit of scot in them. it's looking more likely the more i think on it. i can picture in my minds eye a pow wow with kilted cherokees.
