A somewhat more accurate answer would be "same as a lot of kilt wearers." I really don't know what "most" kilt wearers do, no do I really care to find out.

So many who ask this question think they are being clever and don't realize that they are being rude. There are times for a playful attitude, but many times the question is terribly inappropriate.

Last time I was asked, I just said "No comment"... Didn't feel like giving a witty answer or, for that matter, answering the question.

When I started this thread I meant it only as a report on a particular experience. I am profoundly impressed by both the breadth and the depth of your responses. You have recognized and developed nuances of the situation of which I had not been aware and have turned the thread into a catalog of generally excellent advice on the many appropriate ways to respond to this sort of situation. You are a great group of people; many thanks.

The main thing I have learned from this experience is that I really need to give more thought to how other people are likely to react to what I do. I have known for years that this lady is uncomfortable with surprises; they seem to threaten her. My appearing in a kilt did not fit the model of the behavior she expected of me, and to her that meant that she was wrong and had to change herself if she couldn't change me. With my nearly faultless hindsight I now realize that I could have forestalled the incident simply by giving her husband a heads-up to prepare her for seeing me kilted. Mea culpa.

Maybe I'll do better next time.

My answer would have to be, "sometimes I do and sometimes I don't." And flash a big grin!

Well, I went and did it. Last night was the Unit Christmas party. Yesterday I went up to a buddy and said "I'm wearing if you're wearing" He said "Lets do it!" So we both showed up in our kilts. I wore my ACU pattern Sportkilt, and he wore his Wallace tank. As the person in question walked into the room, my buddy and I stood next to each other and each pulled a corner of our kilt up to expose a little more knee. She shrieked, put her hand over her eyes and walked away. She never said another word about it. The great thing was, a lot of people complimented us on our kilts. One of the officers asked me where I got it. Evidently, when he told his wife that he wanted one, she said "Really!" in that 'please do' tone of voice. So, Sportkilt, you've got one coming in the next few days.

I don't know about that. I don't think it's your job to make sure that other people do not behave boorishly.
