Tartans by Brian Wilton on sale

So its Christmas and my daughter wants to know what I want. Could only think of some books on tartans, in particular, Tartans by Brian Wilton of the STA.

She asked me how to find it so I started at the STA on line shop where it sells for 25 pounds plus shipping from Britain. At the current exchange rate that's about $50.36 plus shipping.

Didn't think Amazon carried it but checked and not only do they carry the book its on sale for $23.10 and no doubt with less shipping for kilties in the U.S.

Don't know what my daughter will decide, but thought others might wanna know where to get a deal on Brian's book.

Mods, wasn't sure if this was the spot or off topic. Sorry if I guessed wrong.

I ordered my copy through Borders/Amazon from a used bookseller, and I'm still waiting on it. Amazon doesn't have any copies in stock. I'm going to call my local Borders store tomorrow to see what the status is of my order.

    Thanks Ron
I've seen the book up at Burnett's and Struth and a few other tartan shops around Toronto, but I'm not sure what they are charging for it, so Amazon might be the best way to go.

Thanks Todd, my eyesight's not so good with the fine print...they say more are on the way. A good price if one's willing to wait. But Amazon can be optimistic.

Long ago gave up on their offering of the Clan Donald book that never seemed to get republished as promised last fall, winter, spring...

    Ron,

I just ordered a copy on Amazon -- I'll be calling my local Borders store tomorrow morning to find out just exactly what's going on. I'll let you know what they say.

    Ron,

Just so you know, my copy arrived today -- and it is a grand book indeed. Every kiltie who is interested in the history of tartan should have this book in their library.

Thanks Todd, gave the info to my daughter...not sure what she'll do. Might order some sox instead...never know with kids...even when they're 39...

I wanted it just for the cover shot of the tartan VW!

Well, happy surprise today...my copy arrived thanks to my daughter. She went through Amazon.

Just had a chance to sklm it but it seems even better than I'd expected. Lots of info on little things in sidebars...so olde besotted brains like mine can easily digest them.

I would be interested in reading an informed review of it, especially as to its accuracy and historical reliability.

Umm its on sale...more than well worth the full price, a deal on sale.

Matt and Todd of this forum are both in the beginning acknowledgements.

Brian Wilton, the author and honcho at the Scottish Tartans Authority, is up front saying there is a lot of misinformation about tartans...he attempts to clear up the myths of various tartans but is up front that for some there is no way to tell or that "merchant created" clan tartans have been in use so long they're now considered clan tartans.

I like the chapter about U.S, Canadian, Australian, Tasmanian, New Zealand tartans that have evolved from the descendents of the clearances.

Skeptic that I can be I'm very very very pleased with this book and had I known the contents would have bought it myself long ago.

For sure its worth the price of a pair of kilt hose....and its even a good book if you never learned to read English....its full of great photos and sketches.

I've already learned some new terms...like "guard lines"

This book is a great basic text for kilties because it not only covers the basics there's lots of detailed info. For us colonists there's a pic of each of the 37 state tartans created to date.

This is a timeless book you can pass on to your descendents. Its a great book to buy as a gift for family members to perk their interest or to show them you're not some kind of kook in a dress that tartans and kilts are high fashion now.

Buy buy buy....on line, local book store, or direct from the Scottish Tartans Authority.
