Just an update. I now have a new MB and processor installed and everything seems to be working normally. I am now running an AMD 64 X2 3800. I know this kind of low end as dual core processors go, but it is fine for me, and wasn't all that expensive. Last upgrade I need right now is a better CPU heat sink and fan. I'm going to order a Zelman as soon as the Christmas expenses are over with. For now my old CPU fan is working, and the board has CPU heat detection and shutdown protection. Interestingly, Windows did not seem to detect the changes and did not give me any validation warnings (so far at least)
