When your socks were cadadh made of tartan wool, you'd cut some strips of wool to tie around the top & hold them up. Look at some of the illustrations of the diced hose with castellated tops, something similar is going on there.

... no one has been wearing them
    I wear 'em.

Ok.... I wear wool hose so my knowledge is limited. The only thing I can contribute here is hearing serious climbers discuss cotton. The out come of the discussion was that in extreme conditions, cotton kills. (Their words)

I have a mild wool allergy, and my husband has a major wool allergy. We both wear cotton hose, but some kind person on this list pointed me to

    http://www.hamiltondrygoods.com/

Which sells civil war re-enactment gear. They make a fine cotton cable knit hose, which I find is plenty warm in a So. Cal Winter (I was at Magic Mountain yesterday in them, and I must say my ears and a thin stretch at the back of my knee were the only parts that were ever cold -- excepting then the water flew up my kilt on the log ride and got me somewhere.... ummm sensitive).

Anyway, I find there hose look good, and aren't wool, and are washable (but I don't recommend putting them through the dryer.)

Warning: I checked their website a few minutes ago, and it seems as if they are updating it, and have "messed up" the HTML I trust it will be back soon
