John, a warm welcome to X Marks from West Sussex. Believe me, as one who is 75% English and 25% Scottish, you simply cannot offend anyone from North of the border by wearing the kilt, as long as you do so respectfully. Wear it formally, semi-formally or casually - but present yourself cleanly, neatly and tidily. Colour co-ordinate your accesories and other items of clothing (shirt, hose, etc.) and you will be just fine. I pop up to Scotland at least once a year and, in fact, will be driving to Dumfries and Edinburgh for ten days in three weeks time and will be kilted throughout - a case of having to be, as I've been a full-time kilt wearer for 8½ years now (yes, down here in Sussex!) and own no trousers or shorts at all.

By the way, where is your "South of the Border"? We like to have some idea of everyone's location since it helps greatly with answering queries, etc, and many of us like to meet up whenever possible. We are also hungry for photos of each other when kilted - so get snapping!!

Take care,
Ham.
