Help with Tartan Ferret Please?
I've been trying to look up a surname on Tartan Ferret at STA, but my computer times out before a result comes up. Could someone out there with a faster connection please look up the surname Warthen?
There is a Walter Warthen in my mother's line who was in Virginia around the late 1700's. Recently I was looking at census records from Scotland from about 1860 and found a lot of Warthens in Perthshire. Makes me wonder if Warthen is a sept of a larger clan.
Any help would be appreciated.
Thanks,
Tom

Tom,
I just did a quick search on the Ferret and nothing turned up.
There are two tartans associated with Perthshire; The Drummond of Peth tartan (that should make Scotus happy!) ca. 1819, Wilson's of Bannockburn and a Perthshire tartan designed in 1988 by Peter MacDonald.
I moved the thread to the heraldry & tartans section, btw.
Regards,
Todd

Might possibly be a phonetic variation of "Warden". Try looking that up. Meanwhile I'll ask my pal Tom what tartan he wears.

edit on this
not being picky here, sorry if it looks that way, but i'm sure clan moffat has only these septs
MOFFAT. Moffatt, Moffett, Mofitt, Maffatt, Maffett, Maffitt.
i searched that site for my name and it also turns up, and i'm not a sept of them, i think it's just a genealogy thing with marrage names as well.
