Thanks for all the good advice. It seems to be, as I thought, an optional item. Trying to decide if the kilt will look "finished" without a belt. Maybe need to look through the cataloge again.

BTW mine will be in Caledonian modern.

You might also check out the leathers at Oconee Leather Works, made by one of our forum members. Steve's work is second to none and the leather top quality. Another option if you are unsure about a belt in general but wold like to try it is to buy a $10 undyed 2" work belt at a Home Depot, Lowes, etc., a small bottle of leather dye, and dye it - easy, cheap, and if you decide you don't really like wearing a belt, not a great loss.

Yes, as others have said there is not a hard and fast rule. Just wanted to point out it's a bit hard to tell until you have that particular kilt on as well.

Although I find a belt to be optional on a traditional kilt, it can help balance the look on me, depending on the other colors/garments I am wearing with it. And for practicality I almost always wear a belt for daytime wear, it just seems right to me and provides a handy spot for a cell phone, to tuck my gloves under, etc. I wear a kilt full time, though, and so use many options.

I think a kilt needs (for looks) a belt unless you are wearing a waistcoat. The other exception is the one you mentioned which is wearing a sweater. If the belt can't be seen I don't wear one.

For me, I like the belt for everything except where a vest is worn. That's my choice.
    -------------------------------

This is what I do. I never wear a belt with a vest --- and sweater.

I play the pipes alot in the heat and a wide belt adds to the discomfort.

To me the most comfortable wearing of the kilt is vest/no belt.

    But do what grabs ya!

now, i was at a wedding wearing a kilt (hired) in August and a mate who owns a kilt said to me that when he bought his kilt, the local kilt hire shop and seller of kilt atire said to him, you don't wear a belt with a dress sporran, as when you sit down, the top part of the sporran will scratch the belt buckle and it'll look ugly.

    it's your choice though.

I always wear a belt, it seems to set off the Kilt. I buy the wide belts with big 'Pewter' buckles from----Target & K-Mart. Even Western/Cowboy stores. Cheaper than 'official' Celtic belts.
And welcome from soaked North Holllywood.

If you aren't in a hurry to go kilted (and you probably are) check out Oconee Leather Works. I can and do highly recommend Steve's work. If you only have two of his belts, they will last a life time.

Yes, I have scratches on a real silver buckle to prove it! No more.

    Real inexpensive belt Phil's post.

It had been mentioned above. I dyed mine black and it never has rubbed off onto the kilt and the tooling is cool too.

PS some time belted and some times not.
