Tornados are extremely violent storms, in a very focused area. If you are in its path, things get torn up. However, you could be nearby, even a house next door, and be relatively untouched.
There are reports of a tornado going down a street taking out houses, lifting to leave the next house untouched, then setting back down and destroying more houses. Very unpredictable.

As to Northern Illinois, not too much damage. A few houses in the Northwest Suburbs of Chicago wrecked, several trucks blown off the highway and many flooded basements (mine included). Northwest Indiana has some flooding right now and I see that Southern Wisconsin took a more serious hit than we did.

Here's the summary of Wisconsin:
Kenosha county had 3 tornadoes touch down and 150mph winds. Falling debris was recorded, which caused massive power outages. About 15 injuries were reported, and no deaths.
In Madison, due to heavy fog that caused white-out conditions, there were two almost simultaneous multi-car collisions on I-90. More than 100 vehicles were involved in crashes along a 5-mile stretch of the interstate Sunday afternoon, which caused the interstate to be closed for 8 hours. As vehicles stopped in the fog, cars and semis started piling-up on the interstate, the medians, and the ditches. There were 2 deaths and over 50 injuries suffered.
I wish I was exaggerating. It was a very frightening night.

Well, the storm that wreaked so much havoc for some of you is just reaching me today in Virginia with just a few showers. No where near the strength that hit you guys. I'm so glad that you guys came out alright. I have spent many nights huddled in the bathtub with my family before. It ain't fun. Again, glad you and your families are ok.

We're now flooding. A dam about 20-25 miles north of here typically has a normal water flow of 1,000 cubic feet per second and yesterday afternoon that figure was at 25,000 cubic feet per second.
Roads are already closed in the northern part of the county and we're expected to end up some eleven feet over flood stage. Our biggest problem might be the weather is now expected to get cold again. If we freeze back up with all this water, we'll have roads closed for weeks.

Welcome to Global Warming, folks. It's only going to get worse. Expect wilder weather fluctuations as heat and cold battle for supremacy.
