I don't know for sure about the history, but I find when I wear my belted plaid that nice ankle length mocs are great. Especially with my hand knit Elizabethan hose.

I did find these awhile ago, and kinda want a pair:

I think I was just looking at those a few days ago. Thanks for bringing that up about going well with the belted plaids I like to wear the plaids in the winter...
I tried to ask my inner curmudgeon before posting, but he sprayed me with the garden hose…
Yes, I have squirrels in my brain…

In terms of boots, I like to wear my O.D. Altama Jungle Boots with my Douglas Modern. I'm also a big fan of those Palladium ankle boots, the Israeli "Scout" commando boots, in black. The uppers are all canvas, super comfy. Great for the summer months.
You can find 'em on ebay for about $20 brand new!!!!

Our Texas Ren Fest is held in October and November about 30 miles north of Houston. The weather varies quite a bit at that time of year, so we have to careful what weekend works best for the great kilt. I like to wear the Medieval Moc boots that are similar to what you linked.

I also wear Doc Martens. For those occasions where the boots aren't appropriate, I wear Doc Martens shoes, which are basically a low-top version of the boots.

A pair of the 3 eye docs, prefferably steel-toe in Oxblood, have been on my list for a while. I'll own a pair one of these days...

Oh wow. I just checked out this site. They have some of the most beautiful footwear I've ever seen. I have a pair of military paratrooper dress boots that I like to wear sometimes. I think they look semi-dress, as they're patent leather.

For piping in parades, I sometimes wear whiite spats and a pair of patent leather parade shoes, which I purchased from the Army Navy Surplus store. They are surprisingly comfortable.

In 1547 a member of the French court accompanied King James V on a tour of the Scottish kingdom. His published account of the trip mentions the "Wild Scots" (highlanders) wearing "boots made in an old-fashioned way, which come as high as their knees."

So apparently those high moccasins many wear at RenFairs arguably have some historic correctness, though who knows how the "old-fashioned" boots were constructed...!
