I saw the movie recently on the Turner Movie Classics movie with an intro by the director's wife. She said it was his favorite movie, credited it with launching his career and described the efforts of the crew to film it. For instance, she said they had to hand-carry the cameras and equipment around to the various sites, and one can see from the film that meant high cliffs and long treks. The image quality is sketchy at times, but the stark beauty of the place, the inhabitants' toughness and courage, and their obvious attachment to the place and their way of life comes clear and clean. My wife wanted to delete the movie off our Tivo, but I've kept it. ...Come to think of it, she probably would have liked leaving the island, and I would have wanted to stay....
