Question Experience with Sandy St. James Kilts?

    Hello, Rabble,

I am trying to work my way into a pipe band...as they are the middle of reorganizing there is lots of confusion and I am unsure what uniform they will provide/require. I'm trying to figure out whether I will need to provide my own kilt in a few months. I need a MacKenzie to the stripe in wool, made to measure.

Does anyone have experience with the kilts provided by Sandy St. James in New Jersey? They offer wool kilts at a reasonable price. Just curious.

They are a sponsor of my friend Andrew's bagpipe website:

I asked him once about the quality of their jackets and he felt the one he had from them was of good quality. But I haven't used them myself.

    Cheers

I don't have any experience with the the company mentioned, but I do remember Scottish kilts having a sale on some tartans, and MacKenzie modern being one of those tartans.

I have had great dealings with them in the past, and for $291 for an 8 yard worsted wool machine sewn kilt, or $351 for a handsewn, that's pretty darn good. You would have to email or call them to let them know that you wanted it to the stripe.

Wow, they're making you buy your own kilt...I hope you're dedicated to this band. All of the bands I've been with have only required we provide shirt, shoes, and hose.

I hope the kilt works out. Let us know how well it works! Also try J. Higgins. That's where my band buys their kilts from.

Well, they are not making me yet...but given the current status I think I had better have something lined up. Just exploring my options.

Thanks for the suggestions, and I welcome any others as well.

    Moosedog,

Would that be the Highlanders? Maybe I'll see you in the Celebration parade!

    Yes, Dale, it would be!

Maybe even sooner--St. Patrick's Day, perhaps?

A co-worker of mine bought his Argyll and a waistcoat form them. They are really nice. He had a bit of a problem at first with communication, but it all worked out in the end. I can't attest to thier kilts but, if it is like their coats it's nice quality stuff.
    Good Luck,
    Sara

As Jamie says, Sandy St. James sponsors my site. That said, I only recommend something if I believe in it. Just for the record, I don't own a St. James kilt. (I own a St. James jacket and have been happy with it.)

Upsides: His kilt quality is very good and the price is fantastic. The kilts are made in Scotland. They're the real thing. I talked to a band manager who received delivery of their kilts from Sandy a few months back. He was very pleased with the quality.

Downsides: There can be a bit of a wait and Sandy will probably not be able to give you a firm delivery date . . . the kilts are made in Scotland so he's at the mercy of the tailors. Sandy can also talk your ear off.

Sandy is a honest fellow. He may not call you back if he doesn't know the answer, but he won't lie to you.

    FWIW.
