The movie changed my life. My father grew up in Livingston, my mother in Lewiston and Missoula. My dad played poker on Front Street (??) in Missoula. They both went to U of Montana in the 30s and 40s - before during and after War II.
My maternal grandparents homesteaded in Roy, lived in Butte, settled in Missoula. My paternal grandparents were from Norris. Lineage goes back to a rabble of Gordons on the Bozeman Trail in 1866 blithly rumbling through Injun country during some talks at Fort Laramie. Fort Reno was still there.
I NEVER EVER understood my parents, grandparents, aunts and uncles until I watched A River Runs Through It. When I finally saw the movie I realized that just like most anywhere else there is a Southwestern Montana culture and they were all seeped in it for generations.
While most of my kin are non-religious, my maternal grandmother was a devout Presbyterian.
Later, watched Legends of the Fall and that movie further helped me understand that Montana culture.
I lived in Missoula until I was about 4 or 5. I have mixed emotions that the family moved to Oregon and I didn't grow up there. Still have kin in Bozeman and enjoy SUMMER visits.
