Making my first X-Kilt

Hey All!

I'm kinda new to the board, I've been registered and lurking about for a couple of months now.

I'm going this Saturday to pick up the material for my first X-Kilt. I'm either getting the digi camo, or the tiger stripe jungle camo.

I'll try to remember to take and post pics along the way, and I'll probably bug the Hades out of y'all when (not if) I get stuck along the way.

Welcome, and good luck! Enjoy your first kiltmaking experience.

Keep in mind that camo patterns are directional, i.e. they often are woven to be worn across the bolt rather than along the selvedge like kilting wool. So depending on what look you want you might need to piece a few widths together to make the pattern "accurate." Or, you might like it the sideways--up to you. Just FYI.

I had to cut mine sideways to keep the pattern from looking wrong. Great thing is that 2 yds of continuos fabric matches up perfectly with my 22" length plus a 2" hem and gives me 3 peices 24"x58"-60" long.
(22"+2"= 24"x3=72" or 2yds)
I sewed the ends together in the interior pleats so they will only be visable from the inside of the kilt.

Yep, I ran into that problem with my latest kilt in Army ACU camo. Took three pieces joined to make it, plus hemming since the selvedge was not where it was supposed to be. Added about 1.5 extra hours. No big deal, but I agree that it looks just plain wrong if the pattern is worn sideways. Well worth the nuisance to get it right.

OK, I went today and picked up 4yds and 30" of tiger stripe came (I wanted 5 yards but that was all that was left)

The problem that I have is the fabric is sewn together at 96", leaving 78" from the sewn area to the other end of the fabric, Now, I thought about separating the two pieces and cutting cutting the fabric down the middle and lining up the pattern.

This will give me enough to do 2 kilts, like I was planning, but I'm not sure if this would be a good idea, since it will leave me with more separate scrap pieces, and I want to make cargo pockets for both kilts.

I'm looking for suggestions, should I do as I stated above, or return the fabric?

Don't worry about the pattern not lining up at the join. The pleats break up the pattern anyway, so it's chopped up pretty well, no matter what.

Look for my thread in the Pics forum where I show my own X-Kilt, made out of predator camo. Predator is different from tiger stripe but you'll get the idea.

So - if you need an average sort of length - 24 inches, plus a hem, you could get three widths from the 78 inch piece - if the fabric is 1.5 yards wide then you would have 4.5 yards of kilt there, minus the seams to join it together.

You can then cut three more pieces from the 96 inch length, leaving 18 inches full width to cut the two waistbands, belt loops if required and the pockets. That might be a bit tight - but do able, I think.

OK, I think I'll give it a try with this fabric. I'll post pics of the finished products.
