SWK Thriftys- what to expect?

Hello rabble!

I finally broke down and bought myself two Stillwater thriftys. I have two of their standards, and one heavyweight, which I, like the rest of you, am very happy with. But to those of you have one or more of each, I'm wondering how the thrifty's compare to the standards. Are they lined? How much material do they use? Are they cooler? The last question is my biggest concern- I don't think I'll be able to wear my standards (and I know there's no way I can wear my heavyweight!) in the summer here in Denver. Are the thrifty's cooler than the standards?

And by the way- I got a Gordon and an Irish National.

I needed something to hold me over until I get my USAK and my KiltStore kilt. You know... the whole "jonesing" thing. I'm also getting a SportKilt. I can't wait for those! I also MIGHT get a Utilikilt or another AmeriKilt. I haven't decided.

It's all good. Hope you get what you want. I can't say anything about the standards being too hot and so on... different blood thickness. I don't really know anything about kilts in the first place, LOL!

Nighthawk, I don't know how the thrifty kilt is but I do own a SWK Economy and have found that to be okay in the warm weather here in ST. Louis. Don't know if that helps you or not

Hey Nighthawk,
I ordered an economy Irish Nat. (everyone in the house but me is Irish) and a thrifty McLaren (Boy Scouts). I don't have a SWK standard but my thoughts on the others are as follows: The difference between the two are that the enconomy has the buckles and a smallish lining and the thrifty is simply a pleated wrap-around Velcro'ed piece of fabric. Neither has a sewn down fell and the fabric is light, I don't know the exact weight. The hem on the XL is 150 inches so that is on the order of4+ yards. The sizing was very much on the large side for me, I ordered from the web site instructions exactly and both were too big for me at XXL. I didn't mind too much as I easily altered them to fit. I just didn't feel the need to send them back. They are not tanks, nor are they intended to be such. They are what they are and I think that they are fabulous although as a bit of a purist I felt like a heretic wearing one at first.(I am now blissfully deep in the abyss of "the casual kilt"!) I ordered a second thrifty in Black Stewart in the next size down XL; fits perfectly! My waist measured between 45-46 inches.

I wear them at work (I'd hate to get "product" on my tank!) and also when I go to play soccer. Wrap them over the soccer shorts for travel to and from. You get built-in hose, the shin pads look a little funny, but who cares. Half of my work day is spent outside and unless the wind is blowing hard I find them to be comfortable. It has been as low as 0F with no wind and I was not uncomfortable (I didn't hang out very long but I was OK) I plan on hiking in these this summer so I'll have to wait until then to report. I would suspect that they will be fine in the summer. What we need is CoolMax tartan!

All in all I think that they are wonderful for what they are. They can't "replace" a wool 8-yarder. They are great for an everyday, casual, mix-it-up, look. At $28 you can't go wrong! Get 'em dirty, wash 'em, wear 'em again, buy more when you wear 'em out! To me they are like jeans, I wouldn't wear dungarees to Lodge or my mother-in-law's birthday party, some do

but it is wrong to me. By the same token, I don't wear a suit to hang out or cut wood. I think you'll be happy

I have one SWK thrifty.
I have sewn down the pleats.
The velcro is of poor quality and I shall have to replace it. I wear a belt anyway.
It is a good kilt for kicking around. I have worn it to church so it should do for most things not to formal.

Wow! Thanks a lot! Sounds like I'll be happy. I was actually planning on using them as everyday wear kilts, anyway.

So to answer the Kilt Store question- I got an 8 yard Balmoral Wolfe tartan (see my avatar).

Oh good! You're getting an eight yard Wolf. I wasn't sure which kind of kilt style you were ordering. Sounds great, Nighthawk.

Slip this in as an after thought... I'm sure Freki and Geri would be pleased, LOL!
