    fabric advice

    Hello everyone, I'm new here.
Please forgive my poor English. My ancestors left the Highlands for France in the 17th century... for political problems.
Nevertheless... I would like your advice on this 16 oz. fabric that seems extremely interesting : worsted wool and very good price.

    Thank you all !

I'm sure that your English is better than my French!

I would ask for a swatch or two before I bought a whole kilt length, and I would ask for a swatch with the kilting selvedge. Some kilting selvedges are better than others. The price is decent but not all that cheap (works out to about $60/yard US) - that's still about $240 just in tartan for a kilt. If you're willing to be patient, you can get better deals on eBay.

What Barb said, Ancienne. For example, I got 4 meters of 16 oz Campbell Ancient by House of Edgar for $41/meter US, and 10 meters of 16 oz Macdonald of Sleat by Lochcarron for about $30/meter. Patence is the key.

    Thank you Barb.
I will take your advice. This forum !
I was planning for a box pleated kilt, so that would be only 2 yards... considering that the fabric is wide enough. Now I didn't look at the shipping costs for France; that's another thing.
    Merci,

Hello, and welcome to our little corner of the web.

Have you looked into the French Tartans. Hamish, "The Kilted Legend" has a kilt in the Breton Tartan that he got from "Maison du Kilt" in Paris and it is wonderful.

If price is not your only consideration I would take a look.

Also, what Clan Crest are you using as your Avatar?

I could't take a look: they have no website . So I phoned. In general, Bretons tartans are indeed wonderful . I phone the gentleman of "La Maison du Kilt" and unfortunately, he didn't have a clue what 16 oz. meant.
He humbly confessed that they served as a link between non-anglophone French and "Scotland"... from where they ordered kilts and so forth.

And, it's not only a question of price. I am well aware that I will keep and cherish this tartan for the rest of my life (especially at my age ) , but it is a question of principle. If I can save 40€ on fabric, I can feed for my family for a week. And for a Scotsman, especially one expatriated for 450 years, that counts. I dont see why I should pay more than the true value.

    Voilà mon ami.
