I play guitar as well, and I push my sporran to the side sometimes. Usually if I am playing acoustic guitar while standing, you would confuse the guitar for an oversized necklace so there is no need to moved the sporran and I dont damage the back of the guitar with the buckle. If I am playing electric, my guitar is slung lower and often, I just forgo the sporran entirely. I like the look of the kilt without a sporran as much as I do the kilt with the sporran. I believe you question was wether or not it was acceptable to wear it to the side OTHER than when you are playing, and I dont see any reason why not. Its your kilt, your sporran do what you like. Me personally, its no sporran or centered, I think the side sporran looks a little goofy if worn for no reason i.e. when not playing guitar or drums.
    Just my two cents.

When I am driving I simply push it beneath the steering wheel and stays out of the way no problem.

I would'nt worry about it too much. Go with what is practical & comfortable.

When I was a re-enactor, I was initially advised to wear the pouch just off of center. But, everytime I walked it would bounce unmercilessly against my upper thigh. I moved it back to center. But, as others say, wear your sporran where-ever it is most comfortable for you under the circumstances.
