I have a 6 yard contemporary kilt with no rise, and two belt loops at the back. The lack of rise means that a belt will have to sit somewhat nearer the top of the kilt, so I use the belt loops to keep it in place. My sporran strap goes outside the loops, as the buckle tends to snag.

On the kilts I have which came with loops I use them for what they were intended for...the sporran. The belt goes over the top just as my dear Nana told me to those many years ago.

I think that was a shot at us scrawny Scots! Ok, im just kidding, I dont really care, I am a bean pole and thats that. I dont have any problem with my sporran coming down. It is also a pain in the rear (almost literally) to shift a sporran if it is through the loops for me. What it boils down to is do what WORKS for and LOOKS GOOD on YOU! We all do things differently but as long as it looks nice there is always room for interperetation.

I just think that men nowadays generally have larger waists than they did years ago (take a look at all those old narrow waisted kilts you see on ebay) and I don't think that if your waist size is close to your hip size or bigger that the sporran chain/strap would sit as it should. Maybe I'm wrong

I use the loops for the belt, not the sporran. I wear mine just as shown in Barb's photo. When I got my first kilt (I only wear trad. 8 yd.) I tried to wear the belt AND sporran through the loops. Not a good idea. Anyway, I agree with those who say the loops are for the belt and not the sporran.

If you go to a Highland games and look a kilt that's been worn a lot (lots of band kilts are this way) with a belt through loops, the kilt is permanently distorted right at the loops, and even the kilt bottom pulls up.
Barb T., a very good post. This is real food for thought.
