It depends on the "hide", but I use an inexpencive "sheared hide" ( total thickness is about 1/8" & compresses with wear ) Plus any sheath I make to wear in a sock (or boot) is made of 1/8" thick leather, so when it is added up, the total thickness of the sheath with the backing adds only 3/8" to the width of the knife.
The major advantage, is as I said, comfort. The wool absorbs the sweat, plus the sheath dose not rub your leg raw.
