SO after considering it, I'm going to try to make the blade first, then decide what to do with the handle. I might just buy a block of Bog Oak from Rab Gordon, but if I can get enough obsidian and make a few blades quickly, I'll call on some of you for a trade...

please post a picture of your obsidian sgian dubh blade when finished. Where would you find / buy obsidian for this project?

My brother does work with bone, antler, silver and turquoise. I could talk to him and see if he would be willing to do something for you... it would most likely have a Native American/southwestern feel to it.
I could also talk to my dad, who is an anthropologist/archaeologist, and specializes in Native American cultures and artifacts, and see if he could come up with an idea for something "traditional" or if he knows someone who does that kind of work...

I just did a google on e-bay for Obsidian knives and found a whole bunch... -and not too expensive either.

Hrmmmm I am not a knapper, but, now that I think about it, I could cut, shape and polish almost any hard stone into a blade with a tang. Hrmmmmmm maybe put a carved wooden haft on it. ... < wheels are turning.>
