When Marmite first came out it was used for all sorts of things which we might now think of as odd - I saw a TV program about things which were new foods when introduced.
There were Marmite cookbooks, where everything was mixed with the stuff.
Vegetarians took to marmite in a big way and put it into vegetable stews to give some 'bite' to the flavour, made a gravy to pour over shredded wheat for breakfast - the combination was then baked for a few minutes so the top was crispy and the underside soft.
Oh drat - now I have visions of a thick crust of home baked bread, still hot from the oven, with butter melting into it, lightly laced with Marmite.

My sister got hold for some Guinness Marmite last year (Ltd edition) It's smoother than the ordinary Marmite and does have a great taste.
I''m off for some toast

No I didn't even know about the Valentine's Day connection. I had made some rather bland yogurt cheese and needed something to "jazz it up" and was making a mess with it all over the desk. I just started wondering.
A local supermarket chain had a whole mess of it on sale for $.50 a jar so I bought the whole lot a couple years ago. I don't think it could possibly go bad; but then again how would you know?
I've never had Vegemite (I like to annoy people by pronouncing the waterfall to rhyme with IT) I'm going to Canada next weekend, do they sell it there?

Bob, you can get it here, but you'll choke when you see the price, especially after getting some for $.50 a jar!

Guess I could get some kind of bread to put the marmite on... I might put it in with the rice meal I have every day.

Try it with a little butter on oatcakes if you can find them. It is a great combination.

Thank you BEEDEE! Oatcakes sound wonderful! I knew the marmite had to go well with oats, but couldn't quite find the right thought. I would have tried mixing it with a little oatmeal, but I will look for oatcakes when I go to the store... I'll have to get the marmite too, te he.

Vile stuff is right, can't stand the stuff. My kids used to love it on toast when they were small.
Me, I prefer Bovril
