Question Ever heard the name RICARDS?

My friend's father was from Scotland and the family name is Ricards. She never thought to ask what clan they were aligned with and I can't find the name on any of the usual sites I check. Have any of you ever come across this name?

    Thanks for your help!

You may already know this, but try spelling it Rickards when you're researching it. A friend of mine bore this name, and I think it originated in Scotland.

I suspect it is a variation of Richards or Rickards (great beer) Take this source with a grain of salt as it is one of the bucket heritage shops that will find a history for any name, but I could find mention of the name here http://www.houseofnames.com/xq/asp.f...mily-crest.htm and http://www.houseofnames.com/xq/asp.f...mily-crest.htm

If I remember the French bit, Ricard is something like Pernod.

Yeah, Colin, the beer was actually named after the cousin of my friend; he worked at Molson's. I can't agree with you on the beer though.
When I think Ricard, I think pastis - mmm!

The only Ricards or Rickards that I ever knew were derived from the Irish Mac Riocáird meaning son of Richard. It should be remembered that many Irish migrated to Great Britain in the mid-19th Century, so many names located there in 1881 may derive from these migrants. Those who could not afford to emigrate to the Americas or Australia generally only made it to Glasgow, Liverpool, London, and other parts of the western coast of Great Britain.
