With time more diverse kilt wearing

I would remind people that what a Highlander would have worn while hunting in the 16th-17th century has no bearing on the rules and etiquette of proper modren Scottish attire, nor should it. Otherwise we end up surrounded by people dressed as "cartoon" Highlanders wearing all the latest fashions found on the newest bog body to be dug up.

And therein lies a distinction that I think should be made. I have several Utilikilts which I wear in lieu of shorts when it is warm. While UKs are based on "proper modern Scottish attire," they are actually an American garment. As such, I do not feel constrained to follow the rules and etiquette regarding proper modern Scottish attire.

Typically, I wear my kilts with Birkenstocks and a short sleeve button down shirt. When I go hiking, am working in the yard or otherwise need better foot protection, I wear socks and hiking boots.

Very interesting observations, I would agree, my kiltwearing is becoming more casual unless the evetn demands something more formal.

I confess that once I even believed that plain kilts were not "proper" kilts, and have some friends who still believe that.
These days I literally live in on of my three hemp kilts from rkilts.com.
They allow me to enjoy all the benefits of a kilt without looking "too Scottish" (not that that is a bad thing, but I am not a Scot) ie - furthering my view that one does not need to be Scottish to wear the kilt.

So plain kilts, imho, further that cause.
They also eliminate the need for sporrans. Once I would not even put a kilt on without a sporran.
I long for the day when many more men will wear kilts more often, but I'm not holding my breath.

If it came across that I wasn't returning respect for others' views on kilt-wearing (or anything else for that matter) then I apologise, because that wasn't my intent. I was merely stating that I don't believe there should be steadfast rules when it comes to wearing a kilt casually. Have all the rules you want for formal occasions but otherwise why not let people just wear a kilt with whatever as long as they're happy?

I don't believe I ever suggested that people couldn't "just" wear a kilt, sir. As I stated earlier, it makes no difference to me what you wear or how you wear it. I respect your right to do so, and I would hope you would return the favour.

today for example I was wearing my kilt with trail boots and a t-shirt with a heavy woolen jumper over the top.
(nice day for a wander around St Andrews )
I feel comfortable doing this, and who can stop me? It's my national dress, I'll wear it any way I want.
