As an update, I will probably be having someone new looking at the corduroy jacket to see if a conversion would be possible. I will also be looking for a matching leather belt to use with the sporran.
If I am able, I will get pictures of the jacket being worn with this kilt before the conversion and after. I haven't given up on this idea yet, but at this point I am thinking about just looking for a kilt jacket. I haven't seen any done in corduroy yet, though. As far as the matching vest, I still don't quite know how the vest is supposed to be worn with the kilt, and the vest I have is a tiny bit too tight. It doesn't fit over the top edge of the kilt too well. If the vest were worn under the kilt, it seems to fit a little better. I figure that is not correct though.
* After trying on a few other vests that go with other suits, I am completely sure that the matching corduroy vest for the jacket is too small for me. I don't know if it can be made larger, but I will ask. Also, the back of this vest is made of satin materiel, so can't be worn on it's own.
I'm trying very hard to not start another thread on this yet, so I may post these questions in other places. When I have pictures of the jacket to post, I will think about starting a fresh thread.
* Moving the folowing to this post to make room.*
Here's a long boring post to keep the thread alive. I had the brown, corduroy jacket and vest looked at by a lady who has done a little sewing and she says the jacket should be easy to shorten and the vest can be widened, but not by her. It gives me hope, so I will find someone to do the work.
There is a little bit of history behind this jacket and vest. It belonged to my step father. He had it made for himself when he was a teenager while living in South Korea; his father was a Colonel in the Air Force and stationed there in the seventies. My mother was going through a bunch of my step father's suits that no longer fit him and gave me several of them; I think I have five or six of them...
The corduroy jacket shows no wear, and looks to be well made, so I am choosing to stick with this conversion project rather than try to find a pre made corduroy, kilt jacket. I like the texture of the corduroy in combination with the wool of the kilt, and it is a cooler materiel for out here in the desert. It also has a bit of an unusual history behind it, and this is the reasoning behind putting it back into use.
* Also, could anyone explain to me if the botum front of the vest should extend passed and show in the sporran cut away on a kilt jacket?
* I saw a thread where Hamish posted that the kilt jacket should really never be buttoned when wearing a waistcoat. There was also some talk of not buttoning the jacket in general, but I'm not too sure about that. I still don't know if the vest can be left as is in the front.
