Tartan Gowns (since the subject has come up)

These things make me weak in the knees, and it's not just the models they're on, either.

This is actually a corset and dress with an under-dress. I've seen the corset in person, a woman was wearing one at the Woodland Highland Games last year. I stopped her and asked if I could look it over carefully. She blushed scarlet as I proceeded to inspect "her" from hipbone to bared shoulder in outrageous detail. I was actually looking at the corset.

I could make one of these, though it would be a serious project. It's not my favorite, but I *could* do it.

PERSONALLY, I would gladly be seen with a date who teamed this corset up with a simple A-Line skirt in a solid color. Of course, I'm having heart palpitations at the model, too....but I really like her top and this is something that a normal human being could actually sew.

Rather Ren Faire, but nice nonetheless...

wish I could find a bigger picture of this one....crikey!

In fact, just look over this whole page...

Got any favorites? X-Marks Lasses, would you wear something like what you see here?

I agree. Tartan gowns can be absolutely beautiful.

They used to have some tartan gowns from the Victorian era on show in the windows of an amusement arcade in the city centre, here.
    They were absolutely gorgeous.

I am trying to get a pattern so that I can get Diane's mum (who is an incredible sewer) to make her a ballgown for dancing in one of the Macdonald tartans.

I have this same photo on another active thread, but it seems as applicable here.

I was hired to perform at this Scottish couple's marriage ceremony & reception which took place at Graceland. They came to Memphis last August to be wed there during Elvis Week.

The bride purchased the gown in her hometown of Edinburgh and had some custom alterations, though I have no recollection what they were.

It was a lovely tartan wedding gown and the outside air temperature that day reached 106 degrees.

Ahhh! Victorian (especially late bustle) is something I wanted to get into with sewing. I sewed one 1883-ish ballgown out of some dark burgundy satin I had sitting around. Lots of things I would do differently, but it was fun for my first major project (I'm relatively new to sewing).

I've seen Victorian fashion plates with tartan fabric in them (black and white art for most of them, but it was definitely a plaid design). Very nice! There were too many things I wanted to sew. Good thing I had to put everything away because of lack of space and funds for something like that. I've a feeling I should avoid this thread or you guys'll have me going nuts to get back to sewing again.

This is a grand picture, but why is it that brides always look so triumphant, and grooms look so...stunned?

It's something to do with finally getting it over with.

I was thrilled to be getting married, but my hands shook the whole way through the ceremony and there 'was' a picture of my half way through the ceremony looking absolutely terrified

, my wife and her mum have made a few gowns from that period. They are a lot of work but absolutely worth it!
I would not be surprised or at all judgmental if you happened to find that you had just a weeeeee bit of money going spare.
