No Rules that I know of on a belted plaid. Those I've seen have aprons in front.

Oh good, thank you for posting that answer. For the way I am using these belted plaids, it works better to have the unpleated aprons.
And as an update, I am still waiting to hear back on what has happened with the three plaids I am having fitted with the drawstrings. With the situation being what it is, it might be best for me to get the plaids back and have someone else help me with them just so no one has to worry about them anymore. I'm still looking into long knee length nightshirts to go with them. I plan on looking around at a large fabric store to see what they might have for other non-wool materiels that I might use. These are after all ment to be practical garments, so I'm willing to let go of much of tradition.

Knee length might be a scoosh long, unless you're wearing your belted plaide longer... perhaps mid-thigh might be better?

I'm thinking a lot now about getting some extra long shirts to go with the plaids. Perhaps as long as to within three or so inches of the knee. Kind of like what the Scots would have done..., but with the plaid covering the shirt and the shirt not sticking out the bottum.
Guess that's an update for this thread.
Barkertown Sutlers makes great long shirts in linen, silk, and cotton. You can get them in white, offwhite, and saffron yellow. And, they are not expensive.

Great! I will look into those. As far as the length, I'm kind of thinking somewhere between the top fo the knee cap and mid thigh. Probably closer to the knee. I would like to wear the shirts in the house on their own as a tunic would be worn. The only tunics I have right now are more on the line of a SCA style, and the sleeves are too much in the way for practical use around the house.

I'm 5' 11'' and the shirts come down to halfway between the knee and mid-thigh.

Sounds good. That's most likely what I need to get.
I should clarify something I stated before in case anyone starts reading this thread at this point. I wasn't talking about wearing a leine or a period correct garment under the plaid. I was thinking of the way the scots used the shirt or tunic as a garment that could be worn alone or with the kilt. I'm thinking of a modern practical garment like a long t-shirt or nightshirt because that is how the plaid will be being used.

I saw another thread on the belted plaid floating around out there, so I decided to bump this one. I'm still trying to get the fabric back on this project. That fabric was given to me from left over materiel, so it isn't that I'm losing any money in this. I think I might start over with new material and rethink the project.

I guess that you could still pleat the front apron whether it has the drawstring or not. I guess it really isn't an issue.

drawing Belted Plaid/great Kilt
Has anyone here tried putting the drawstring loops on the OUTSIDE?
I did a "trial-run" , of putting drawstring loops, on the inside, but found that it didn't close the aprons. After removing the (safety-pinned) loops from the inside, I tried (after hand-pleating) laying on the material, with a drawstring, on the outside ( no loops - just using like a belt), and found that ( for me) it works better. Think I'll sew the drawstring loops on the outside, and not worry too much about matching the tartan on the material, with the loops, as they would be covered by the belt, later, anyway. Anyone already tried this?
