I know wood chips are not the same exact kind of hazard as hot mill scale and welding sparks, but I don't think I would want big outside cargo pockets on a kilt I was gonna wear to run a chain saw in, either. At the least they would accumulate chips and they would be be annoying to get out. At worst, loose floppy pocket material could suck the kilt into the saw. Might be enough mass of fabric to stall the saw dead, like chain saw safety chaps, I don't know. Maybe a bit of kevlar in the apron ?

Close woven "hard" finish on the fabric is what I would be most concerned about, I think.

I have used canvas, leather, and worsted wool. I am thinking of trying the hemp fabrics that are out there in heavy twill or herring bone.

How about a Buzz Kidder canvas kilt? I have one and it's quite sturdy. It would probably stand up to the work you're doing.

I garden in a Buzz Kidder canvas kilt, and I'm not ashamed of myself... I like to use a full tool apron in combination with that You might also check the USAK casual kilts, but I don't have one of those yet.

I would lean more towards a kilt apron. Made from a Carhartt type of hard canvas or sailcloth. Fairly inexpensive and easy to make.
Wear your kilt to an upholstery shop or one that does boat tops. Then ask them to sew up something.
Under it you can wear an kilt without worrying about damaging it.

You might want to look into alt kilt. They do a lot of custom jobs and use a lot of different materials. Reasonably priced too.
