Someone in another thread said that was a tweed that he was wearing. I'll go plop those pics down too.

Hi Ted,
well in the posted pics the hat Bernard is wearing is solid colored, not tartan. In the last photo it almost looks saffron in color!

Thanks BoldHighlander. In another thread, someone said it looked like a tweed. I'll just go with that.
I think what's going on, and it's funny, is that I had a little Bernard doll when I was a kid. He was wearing the hat and jacket... I think there was a scarf on the doll too. Anyway, the hat and probably the vest was made of a tweed looking material, but on the small doll, the tweed looked a little like a tartan patern.
All that being said, I just wanted to share with you all what was going on in my mind, image wise, when I am thinking about the hat scarf and jacket. I'm sure there have been many other things I've seen that contribute, but this was one of the earliest that I can remember.

Thanks to J.B. Simpson for the pictures.

You know Ted, my nephew (he's now 24) was really into the Rescuers as a small child, and I recall seeing a picture of Bernard wearing his hat w/ a definite tartan design upon it.
It was pretty generic though, and was probably just the artist conception, nothing that I recall from the movies, though I could be wrong.

Thanks. I'm going to say it was a tiny bit like a Wallace tartan. Very nice actually, but it was after all a cartoon.
Just for the record, here's the post where it was called a tweed:

Cheers!
Strangely I'm glad this thread keeps getting updated. Judging by the number of thread views for it I'm obviously not alone.
Thank you, starbkjrus!
The story here is that I fell in love with the look of that tweed after seeing the movie as a child. That was when I started wearing driving caps. I even had a little stuffed doll of Bernard. The animaters were wise to pick the complementry red-ish orange to go with the gray mouse color. Anyway, guess I'm sticking with tweed. I almost plopped this picture down in the tartan forum.
And this gardening thread kind of... grows on you.

Driving, Ivy, Flat Caps
Ted,
was poking about the 'web and found some different single-panel "Driving" type of caps out there. I think the most common name (from what I've seen) for this style is either the "Ivy" or "Flat" cap.
Here's the links:
Ivy Cap

(Cavanagh) Flat Cap

Irish Flat Cap (nice brown or gray tweeds)

Ted, if your searching for a nice tweed style, I think the last link is what you might want. These Irish Flat Caps come in either a brown or a gray tweed, and are not badly priced at about $42.
Very stylish looking caps Ted!

Reason: Mix-up on price $$

Thanks for looking those up, BoldHighlander. I'll probably copy those links over into the thread where I hord all my other links. That last one sounds really good.
