In looking over all the comments concerning the possible item that could be made from the remaining fabric (About 2 1/2 yards, 58" wide) left from making the Cunningham kilts, I note--trews, fly plaids, flashes, sash, doublet, waist coat with scoop neck and with standard 6 button, and scarf. Not being well grounded in the various parts of Scottish dress other than the kilt, where would I find definitions or discriptions of the above, and directions on how to make them, or patterns for the same. emyclaire

Hello, Emyclaire. Let me first say how lucky your grandson is to have you in his life.

There have been several posts on making flashes, at the least. Use the "Search" feature to find them, and they should be a great guide, where available.

    All the best!

Trews - simplistically pants cut on the bias The Tartan museum has a pattern - http://giftshop.scottishtartans.org/patterns.htm

Fly Plaid - basically a square of cloth with a fringe - I may be wrong but I think it is normally 58 inches square. It can have a straight fringe, twisted fringe or a braided fringe.

Waist coat - five or six button vest with the front sides below the button curved away so it doesn't interfere with the sporran - belt not worn.

Doublet - fancy jacket - I don't think you have enough material.

When you got to the Tartan Museum site they should have picture of all these items.
