It's a lifetime appointment unless the holder chooses to retire.

Gilmore, They no longer have the chance to petition for a grant of arms if they purchase a feudal barony. Since the abolition of feudal tenure in Nov 2004 this has not been possible. Feudal Baronies in the most part were based on 'land superiority' there is no longer land superiority. So purchasing a Barony will not entitle you to petition for a coat of arms. Unless you are already Scots, or have a proven paper chase of Scots decent, or own land in Scotland.

Remember Lyon Court is a Court of Law and Lyon is the Judge in his Court which, also has its own Procurator Fiscal (prosecutor). To be Lyon you have to have a degree in law and we all know what solicitors get paid. I think at present full time judge in a court of law in Scotland is on about 160K + and they probably only work three days a week anyway

Lyon retires at 70 although I believe they can have a 2 year extension.

Yes, I know this. Well, I know that it hasn't been possible because Lyon said it wasn't possible.
I have heard from informed sources the opinion that the former Lord Lyon was thought to be averse to feudal baronies altogether, and am wondering if the new Lyon shares this alleged aversion.

I cant see him being able to reverse the situation regarding arms for those purchasing Baronies. The ending of feudal tenure was a Scottish Government one so in away, I think, he has his hands tied behind his back.

Me too!
But the rates quoted are pro rata which would mean that for a 3 day week he would only get three fifths of that.

OK, help me out here, fellow X-Markers! I have always wondered this, and it may seem like a silly question, but...is it pronounced Lord "Lion" or "Lee-own", or some other way?
THANKS!
