A shame, really. At the time, buying a kilt sewn in the USA was a "new" thing. (Or so it seemed. I doubt it was all /that/ new.)
Exactly, JL; I was very pleased with my first kilt from Higgins, but the second one left much to be desired.

Well, that's too bad. My first one from them was lovely, but I suppose I won't go for a second given the reviews.

Last month I took delivery of a custom-made kilt from J. Higgins with the Duncan Modern tartan and was completely impressed with the quality and craftsmanship.

Outstanding!
For their sake I hope the problem is now in the past.
Nonetheless though, when it comes to a few hundred frogskins, "once burnt, twice shy".

The kilt is from celtic craft center and the JACKET i am wearing the pictures is from J. Higgins. Just wanted to make that clear.
BTW, for the fashionistas out there: why is the jacket not buttoned? Is there some historical significance or something?
My other questions is this: what the heck is inscribed on the buttons?!? I cant read it. I can tell it's gaelic, but beyond that my buttons are somewhat illegible. Anyone know?

I have bought a glengarry bonnet, a plain leather sporran, two pairs of brogues, and several other odds and ends from J. Higgins. I wouldn't recommend their tartan hose anymore as they changed to a lesser quality material (acrylic?). I do have one kilt they made, which I am pleased with, but I suppose I am lucky based on the other testamonies here. Regardless, overall, I am pleased with the items I have purchased from them.

In general, my luck has been better with them regarding accessories. Since they're just up the road in the KC metro area, shipping to SW MO never took long -- 1 to 2 days tops if they had the item(s) in stock.
Second Jack's observations on their tartan/diced hose.

Like you Steve it's been the "odds and ends" I've purchased from them.
I cannot comment upon the quality (or lack thereof) of their kilts.
