Two kingdoms -- Scotland and England -- were joined in 1603. Ireland was not officially added to the Union until 1801 with its own Act of Union:

Quite right, but the uniting of the crowns and acts of union are two different things. James in his sovereign rite was king of England, Ireland and Scotland. Just as today Elizabeth is queen of the UK, Australia, New Zealand and Canada (and other places), but those countries are not in union.
