Jackets
I am helping a friend of mine now that I have everything settled in for my prom. Anyways he is going to the same prom as I and he will be kilted. he wants to purchase a formal jacket, vest, hose, belt, flashes and what not for the prom. this won't be just for prom, he wants to purchase these to use as a dress uniform when he is on duty as a junior navy officer (I don't remember the title exactly) anywho he is pretty much dead set on the leatherneck tartan. now what are the most economical routes to take?
he has:
SWK thrifty Goron
SWK Economy Irish National
SWK standard leatherneck (on order)
Flashes that are included with the kilt
black shoes that can be shined to a mirror finish with long black laces
black belt with USMC buckle
mini k-bar that he uses as a sgain (NO, we won't have sgains at prom don't worry!)
black daywear sporran from SWK
bassically he needs hose, a jacket, a vest and hes set.
where would you guys look for these if there was a budget of $150 and a dance on May 3? I am not sure about modification of a coat but I don't think there is a tailor around here willing to do it for cheap.
thanks!
~Casey

All for the price of $150? I think the first place to look would be in a dream... That is a pretty low ball budget for all that gear. I know I couldn't have got all that for that price.. I hope someone here can help you, but ebay would be a good place to start.

You could either rent a Prince Charlie and accessories... or you could try and pick up an ex-rental tailcoat and get a local tailor to turn it into a prince charlie for you. There are some threads here on how to do that. You'd still need to order the metal buttons.
Piper hose are a good deal. Scottish Lion has them at $22. Get dark ones for formal wear.
If he just has regular shoes, I wouldn't bother lacing them around the ankle like ghillie brogues. Just wear them like regular shoes.
While you're picking up the tailcoat, see if you can get a backless three-button vest from the same place.
That's about the best I can suggest given the budget in question.

If he's going into the Navy, he really shouldn't get the Leatherneck tartan, not as his only kilt. I believe Rocky at USA Kilts still has some of the US Navy tartan left.
And he's not going to be able to wear any civilian kit as a Navy officer, so he can simply disabuse himself of that notion now.

thanks for the replies. now the leather neck isn't going to be his only kilt, he has a gordon and an irish national already. he really likes the leatherneck, and he is on the fence wheather to go Marines or navy. he is going to do seal training this summer but he hasn't decided since hes still only 17

he doesn't need the belt if he's going to wear a waistcoat.

I posted a thread not too long ago about needing a kilt jacket, quick and cheap. I got an argyll jacket and waistcoat through ebay... If I remember correctly the jacket, waistcoat, and shipping were all under $200 total, and everything arrived within a couple of weeks of ordering. If you want to search for that thread, you could see if that ebay vendor has what you need in your price range.

just talked to my friend and he told me his official rank:
petty officer 2nd class, NSCC devision leading petty officer
Now, he is going to go with a US navy tartan USAkilt and a Eton captain's jacket that he is going to put his official rank and insignia on. and were both stoked!
thanks!
