Yeah, it's really a non-issue. I may live in the South, but I've been kilted in the Notherly latitudes (during the winter) on quite a few occasions. I had to wait an hour and a half, outside the Met in NY, to catch a cab one time. A small blizzard started, with 50-60 mph winds and a true air temperature of 16 degrees (-6 wind chill, if I remember). I leaned up against a little bench, to stop my kilt blowing up (13 ounce 4-yard affair), and the wind direction kept the aprons down on it's own... for the most part. I won't lie- it was cold as a witch's heart out there and my mustache was filled with ice, but I might well have been colder in a pair of pants than I was in that kilt.

If the gist of your inquiry is whether or not to wear UNDERWEAR...just wear whatever you want and DON'T WORRY. It's a non-issue...really.

Yeah, what AA said. Just remember, when someone asks if you're cold, just tell them you have a heater under the kilt.

I've been in -1F with my Stillwater Heavyweight, a sweater and basic leather jacket. Had to keep the jacket open to keep from over heating.

I live in Seattle, Washington.. and it's snowing today. I was outside in my tank and, despite what some would assume, I wasn't cold at all.

Somewhere, years ago, there was a thread about this that talked about keeping about five special areas of the body warm to keep the entire body warm...was like, the back of the hands, the back of the neck...seemed sound advice.

Me, I do layers and go to leather kilts or 16 ounce wool kilts.

It was about 8 degrees F when this pic was taken, had a jacket, vest, sweater, and t-shirt on and an overcoat for back up. The Utilikilt's brown leather was toasty warm.

Was warmer for this shot, maybe 30 degrees F with no wind and sun out. Just a t-shirt and wool jacket with cotton Basil Utilikilt's Survival II.

Which reminds me...if you're gonna go regimental on the snow be sure to take into account the possibility of reflected sun rays and possible painful sunburn.

It's spring down here too. Very nice weather.

But in a couple of months, it'll be deathly hot, and the kilt has always been good for me in the hot summer... Um, I do wear sandals with the kilt.
Those pics are up in the gallery too.
I tried to ask my inner curmudgeon before posting, but he sprayed me with the garden hose…
