If the gist of your inquiry is whether or not to wear UNDERWEAR...just wear whatever you want and DON'T WORRY. It's a non-issue...really.

Yeah, what AA said. Just remember, when someone asks if you're cold, just tell them you have a heater under the kilt.
I've been in -1F with my Stillwater Heavyweight, a sweater and basic leather jacket. Had to keep the jacket open to keep from over heating.

I live in Seattle, Washington.. and it's snowing today. I was outside in my tank and, despite what some would assume, I wasn't cold at all.

Somewhere, years ago, there was a thread about this that talked about keeping about five special areas of the body warm to keep the entire body warm...was like, the back of the hands, the back of the neck...seemed sound advice.
Me, I do layers and go to leather kilts or 16 ounce wool kilts.

It was about 8 degrees F when this pic was taken, had a jacket, vest, sweater, and t-shirt on and an overcoat for back up. The Utilikilt's brown leather was toasty warm.

Was warmer for this shot, maybe 30 degrees F with no wind and sun out. Just a t-shirt and wool jacket with cotton Basil Utilikilt's Survival II.
Which reminds me...if you're gonna go regimental on the snow be sure to take into account the possibility of reflected sun rays and possible painful sunburn.

It's spring down here too. Very nice weather.
But in a couple of months, it'll be deathly hot, and the kilt has always been good for me in the hot summer... Um, I do wear sandals with the kilt.
Those pics are up in the gallery too.

I agree! It sure is cold out here. Gets down almost to 45° at night! Can you believe it? I can barely walk around campus in my SportKilt and aloha shirt without getting a little colder than usual!

This has been my third winter, kilted full-time, in Ontario.
Have to say I've found the kilts as warm, or warmer, than any trousers.
I've also got one of the WPG kilts - now that one's almost too warm.

Provided your kilt is wool (I've never owned any other kind, so I can't comment on those), your lower body will be covered with several thicknesses, and so you should be pretty toasty. As they said, kilt hose are generally pretty warm as well, and your knees won't get too cold, because they're mostly bone anyway.
I've played my pipes in all sorts of weather, and the only problem has been my hands getting cold, though sticking them in the top of my kilt warms things up pretty well. The wool traps all the heat from your core anyway.

Thanks to everyone...that addresses much of my concern...I'm pretty skinny--don't have much insulation.
I wondered if there was some sort of silk or polypro underwear--like bike shorts--that folks switched to in colder weather.
