You've got the kilt on, good for you. Nothing wrong with that. It's the rest of the outfit that needs sorted out ... you want to select things that are appropriate for the occasion. Now, you can either be labeled a boor for not wearing the appropriate kilt accessories, or you can just say "the heck with it!" and be a free spirit and wear what you like. I say it's better to go with dressing the rest of your kilted self appropriately.
White socks, whether with a kilt or a trousered ensemble, have no place in formal situations.
