Its really depends upon where in Germany as well as the level of formality. Kits may be fine but they may also be an irritation. I would strongly advise prior consent and only seek it after one has studied the options. In Bavarian villages, for example, its tradition for the bride to wear a nice Dindl and the groom to wear a "traditional" outfit of leather pants ("Lederhosen"). The style even of these items will be dictated by the style of the village. Guests are expected to dress according to local custom (and this is not always dressy).
The Wedding is in September and we may be going to Oktoberfest in the same trip. I am going to be kilted as much as possible.
The Wiese'n is filled with folklore costumes, in particular low grade imported "Lederhosen" and Alpine styled peasant dresses (pseudo-"Dirndln") and, of course, kilts (overwhelmingly these days of Pakistan origin like the Lederhosen). I'd perhaps NOT wear a good kilt as large crowds of binge drinkers, beer tossed about in heavy 1 litre mugs, fatty roasted pig and cow, people standing on tables, burning cigarettes and good kilts don't mix well.

To the wedding, I'll wear my USA MacRae. To Fest I'll wear my Stewart Hunting ****-kilt. But I will check with the bride. She has seen me in my kilt. She and her fiancee visited here in September.

I´m German, and I live in Germany. Though being a little biased because of wearing the kilt myself I can tell you, that people here are very interested in kilts. Be prepared to answer lots of questions, and make sure you won´t top the bride standing in the limelight
Have fun and enjoy Germany!
Cheers

I spent nearly 6 years stationed in Germany and my kilt always went down well with the locals. There are also several pipe bands in Germany and the Germans are quite used to being invaded periodically by hordes of kilted Scottish football (soccer) fans travelling to away matches. Wear it proudly and hoist one for me at the Bierfest. Zum wohl!

Hallo,
you mean Osterweick, near Bad Harzburg ?
So have fun in this very lovely landscape and reserve some time to visit Bad Harzburg.
Also you should visit the Brocken about 20 Km to go.There you can make a trip with the Brocken Railways:

Yes, that's the town. Last time we were there, we also toured Winegerode (sp). A beautiful town. Drove through the Harz area. Then hopped oon the train for a great ride through the countryside toward Nuremburg, Munich, and into Austria. Can't wait to get back. September is a long way off.

I've been to several weddings in Germany kilted, including my own. The resonance has always been, without exception, highly positive.
Have fun!
