protection against moths

You know, I've heard of that before, but never tried it. Thanks for the link. Do you have any experience with what this method can do to a kilt if left that way over time (two or three weeks)? Also, has anyone tried rolling a low yardage box pleated affair? Just interested to see what experience shows.

I've not left one rolled for an extended period of time. But, I've rolled my 4 yd box pleat and carried in a suitcase a time or two, and it worked beautifully.

I put cedar paneling in all of our closets years ago, and haven't had any problems since then. I've also known people who put small chuncks of cedar in mesh bags in with their clothes.... and don't they sell cedar chips for dog bedding?

Actually, one source for cedar shavings is at the pet store...they sell it as litter for the bottoms of hamster cages. While I've heard that the little critters actually may find the aromatic oils irritating to their respiratory systems (I had several pet rats a while back and I pampered those little darlings incessantly), you could stuff an old sock with the shavings and put it in the drawer with the woolen stuff.

Another inexpensive way is to line your closet, (actually doing just the back wall has worked for me,) with cedar flake board sold at many of the home center / lumber yards. It's 1/4" thick, can be put up with nails or screws, and if it ever starts to lose it's aroma, just scuff it up with a piece of sandpaper and the aroma comes right back.

Thanks for starting this thread, DWFII. I've been thinking about lining my closet with cedar panels, and will probably go with that fix unless someone has a better idea. I'd prefer a cedar chest, but I don't have the floor space for one.

I recently pulled my far too small Gunn Locharron kilt from my closet to show my oldest daughter and found it to have been ravaged by moths. It was in a clothing bag with cedar that had dried out. It is now in a large plastic bin with synthetic cedar. I am working on either purchasing a cedar chest or building one.
