    Travel advice, NY

OK guys, looks like I need to take the family to NY this summer. Any advice? The girls want to see a Broadway show(s), I guess I would want to catch a Met before they move to the new stadium next year. Is there a better or more affordable time to visit, weekdays, weekends?

I'll gladly swap guide service in central KY in exchange for same in the city.

    Thanks

    David

Most generous, and I should have included those things in my original post. My 15 year old is pushing for Broadway & shopping, others don't really care, 18 year old and I would like to see the Mets play. Pretty simple stuff. Wife says drive up, I don't remember the city as being particularly car friendly but I was only there a couple of times when I worked on Long Island

    David,

At least half the adventure is figuring out how to get around on the trains, buses, subways, and New York taxicabs. Much of the city revolves around public transit. Go prepared for many mind-expanding experiences.

Did I ever tell you about the time I took a loaded touring bike on the train into Grand Central, made a short ride across town, and another train out of Penn Station? New Yorkers didn't even bat an eye!

Im not much for B-way, so I cant really say much about that but there is the spot in Times Sq were Im told you can get good tickets for weekday early shows. Im not much of a Mets fan but you should not have any trouble getting tickets to a game. As far as driving besides the cost of gas up her being about $3.45 a gal. the parking fees for the lots in the city will kill you, and forget about street parking. The planetarium has had a complete make over a couple of years ago, thats a nice spot to hit with kids. And Coney Island has a baseball team now, if you cant get Mets tickets.

W2F, Not my idea of fun, but sometimes it's best to go along. Truthfully, Lexington is too big for me, but it's a great place to make a living. Sounds like a good story though.

Keith, thanks, I had heard similar remarks before about tickets. The point of the baseball was as much about seeing what should be a really good team in the last season at Shea.

Taking a car into NYC is not recommended...I drive a truck in NYC on a daily basis...not fun. and the NYPD are vultures when it comes to parking ticket.

As for Broadway, there are a number of good shows.

Les Miserables is back on Broadway from what I've heard...its my favorite, very powerful music.

I think Phantom is still on as well. I would also recommend looking into some of the off Broadway shows...you can find some real gems.

and lets not forget lunch or diner at St. Andrews!!! good Haggis!!
