It was fun to make, only cost about $25 and is fun to wear!
Looks great...good job! Just don't have the patience or the trust to DIY...

This is great, guys; thanks! You've certainly added to my options. Can you tell me more about Buzz Kidder kilts?

The Buzz Kidder canvas kilt is the casual kilt I prefer. It is made to be worn higher up toward the waist than the UK and so on. What would you like to know?

I will say, that I like how rugged they are, and that the pleats are fully sewn in at the front and back edge. I do a bit of gardening in mine, but I also wear it to the store and so on. They do have them in black, but there aren't any pockets.

I Guess I could add that I machine wash mine. I don't know how it does in a clothes dryer because I don't have one. I lay mine out across a clothes drying rack and air dry it. It needs a bit of pressing after that. Hope that helps.

    * Rather than "prefer," I should have written it "is the kilt I am familiar with and wear." I don't have any of the other canvas kilts. *

WELL BLESS YOU!! As anyone can clearly see from my feedbacks, I do strive to please and am very proud to be one of the many distributors represented on X-Marks.
I purposely selected the Kidder kilts because they are, as has been so well reflected here, so well made, stylish, easy care, and use quality fabrics. I, and many around the world, enjoy mine because they are virtually indestructible and simple to wash. NOT SPAM, just a few facts for those seeking very affordable casual kilts.
The canvas duck fabric will stand up to a lot of wearing and abuse, but is not so heavy as to make it hot to wear or uncomfortable due to weight. It is designed to be worn at the level of the navel in the tradtional manner, but I have found that many wear their's lower. I wear mine higher due to the all too common issue of the dunlop!

Utilikilt? F-K? Union? USA? I need your advice:

What do you like best about yours?

If there was one thing you'd change, what would it be?

Thanks for helping me sort this out! (I'm leaning towards a Utilikilt Mocker...)
I currently own 2 black casual kilts, both made by Utilikilts - one Original & one Mocker. I love the Original (which I'm wearing right now), but not the Mocker & that comes down primarily to one factor - after getting the Mocker I found that I prefer external pockets to internal pockets.

So, if you checked the Utilikilt measuring instructions & you take a 36-inch waist, I could make you a real good deal on a hardly used black Utilikilt Mocker.

Couldn't agree more. My second kilt, years ago, was a Buzz Kidder in dark green. Great item. The hip taper was mentioned earlier... it's 15%, as I recall. I will say that my best friend has one also, and I think his waist/hip differential is a bit larger than average; as a result, the apron looks a little bit wacked. That said, as long as you don't have larger than average hips (for a man), you should be fine.

Thanks for helping me sort this out! (I'm leaning towards a Utilikilt Mocker...)
As luck would have it, I have one of each. (Or more than one in some cases)
In the order that you listed:

    1) Utilikilt : This was my gateway kilt. It's what proved to me that, yes, I can rock a kilt, and look damned good. I have the original, denim, mocker, workmans and survival models, and they're all really great. The workmans has the most rugged look but the material is definitely stiffer. (And luckily, it passes through airport metal detectors!!!) The original is a great model (I love having lots of space in the pockets.) The mocker is nice, but I actually think that the slash pockets might be a bit too deep. It doesn't look all that keen when you're trying to fish something out from the bottom ;) The survival is awesome. It has the slash pockets, and the cargo pockets, and if you want to clean up the look, you can remove the cargo pockets.

The downside to the Utilikilt, is it is a more mass produced unit, so it won't have that "built just for you" feel to it.

    2) Freedom Kilts : Without a doubt, the most option friendly contemporary kilt maker out there. You want slash pockets? You want cargo pockets? You want removable cargo pockets? You want a hidden apron pocket? You want rear pockets? You want box pleats? You want lots of pleats? You want minimal pleats? You want it to ride above your navel? at your navel? below your navel? You want the back to sit higher? You want it, I bet Mr. Ashton will be able to accomodate you.

The only negative, is that it could become a wee bit pricey. That, however, is in your control. (Just stop asking for so many options! But it's sooooo hard!!!)

    3) Union Kilts : They offer a contemporary kilt that also has a side buckle closure system that works nicely. I have a corduroy from them that is very comfortable. I don't really have much more to say about them, I like them, there's nothing that really comes to mind that I dislike about them. Oh! Maybe their logo is a bit large on the back. That's about it.

    4) USA Kilts : I only have their casual model in the American Heritage tartan. It's quickly become a favourite of mine to wear about the house. It's so easy to throw on, holds a pleat extremely well and is quite resistant to wrinkling. I managed to get an under apron pocket put onto mine, and that comes in handy, although I really wish that there were more pocket options. Even without the pockets though, I'm looking at placing another order with them, to try one of their semi-traditional models.

Two other companies that I've gotten contemporary kilts from, have been:
    a) R Kilts : I have a hemp model, and it's awesome. It's a very hard decision for me to make, on which contemporary kilt is my favourite, but it always comes down to this, my freedom kilt, and whatever kilt I happen to be wearing at the time ;) (Wheee, copped out there) I have an order in for a bronze leather as well. I can't wait!! Also, I believe that Mr. Pel is going to be making an announcement soonish, about possible additions to his lineup of kilts.

    b) Alt Kilt : Dealing with Regina has been great, then frustrating, then great AND frustrating. heh. In all honesty, the first frustrating part came when there were just other life priorities that she had to look after, and that is fine with me now. I only mention it because I want to mention both the good and the bad. She has been great at sourcing out a material for me, and she's done some really nice work on the two kilts she's made for me. Her pricing is very accomodating as well. I'm sure I'll be dealing with her more in the future. (If she puts up with me)

Hope I was able to give you a little bit more info to make your decision.

    Mike

I have a black alphakilt and it is by far my favorite kilt. Granted it is the only contemporary kilt I own, but I still recommend it. Daron is great to work with, the price is comparable to one of the cheaper utilikilts (I think. I got mine while they were selling them wholesale, so I'm not certain about the exact prices) they are made to measure, and they give you plenty of options. They are also good looking and tough. Plus they will resize and repair for free for life.

I have 2 black kilts for Utilikilt and a black leather Kilt from R-Kilt. I love them all and I have no complain with of them. Okay, I love my R-Kilt more than my utilikilt because it simply get more attention!!!!
